Bad child-rearing

Horrible upbringing was entitled to one of the most important radio programs in recent times. I am a graduate profession, with just the President of the Republic required the ability to train and educate our young people, who rely on our nation. Do not imagine now that I'm going to talk about the platform and the omniscient expert lyt?t? education seemingly failed. I will only tell you what I see these days.

More and more often get to hear that children are seen as equals as friends that parents do not have the ability or the courage to grow. Let's talk about lapsityranneista just like it would be natural that the parents may be laden everyday pomottaa. Less hears the old wisdom that the parents' primary function is to produce a disappointment to the child and teach them to endure. Thus, it is easier to continue to accept the challenges of the outside world.

I do not remember grotesque educational program as a Swedish pampering competition, in which parents publicly rehenteliv?t inactive sweetheart how much they get the money to burn and how much time he spent passaamiseensa on a daily basis. Did not think to go in mind how unhappy the future of these children to create paapojat. Vine will need support throughout their lives.

A few of the basics would grant more respectable. The door has not been forced to let the eyes of another. I do not have to be the first. Headgear is not a male person from the inside, not especially when eating.

The post-war scarcity taught to respect food. Now it is wasted, waste, even if everyone could take only what they need. Multi-student would take more preferably, but not be. Meanwhile, the other half to put his own pig food. A brave adult to solve the problem.

Home often resembles hamburger - and will go separately. Home would require a sense of security, even in a common moment of calm, during which could change the news. The problem is Scandinavian. The meal in many civilized country culture is still at a premium.

I got tinder for this entry, when I traveled by train on Friday night from Helsinki to Vaasa. Toijala wagon rush confirmation class about fifteen young people aged around 30-year-old woman's chair. Wings Over Atreia: Attitude of gratitude

For Solorius, I expounded on my wish list for Aion, detailing things I wanted to see in game. Now, however, 'tis the season to express thankfulness for that which we have. While contemplating the many things I am grateful for in my life, I also considered the things that I am grateful for in the world of Atreia. Sure, things are not perfect (what world, real or pixelated, is?), and there are problems, bugs, and things I still hope are changed or added, but that does not diminish the fact that Aion still offers many things to gamers in general -- and me in particular.

Originally slated to release during the holiday, this topic was preempted by last week's announcement. No matter -- I certainly don't mind stretching out the season of gratitude. So while it might be more trendy to troll and spread hate, I dedicate this week's Wings Over Atreia to just saying thanks.

Don't believe there are things to be thankful for? Step past the cut (or roll, if you enjoyed as much turkey as I did) to check out my reasons and a chance to express your own.

Some people may quirk their brows at the thought that you can be thankful for anything in a video game, much less an MMO. Sure, you can play and enjoy them, but be thankful for them? Why not? An attitude of gratitude is a positive thing no matter what it is applied to, and the more it's applied to, the better.

First and foremost, I am extremely grateful for friends I have made; because of Aion, I have a larger group of people whom I can enjoy game time with, whether in Atreia or elsewhere. Not all of my friends may stay active in Aion, but there are many in the group I would happily check out other titles with just to continue to hang out.

Not only did I meet some incredible people whom I love grouping and hunting with, but I was also lucky enough to come away with a few people who are well beyond in-game friends and are a very important part of my life. I had the chance to meet up with three at Dragon*Con; unfortunately, I have to hop on over to Australia to hang with another.

Along those lines, I am also grateful for the RL friends, including my kids, who joined me in Atreia. There is nothing like sharing experiences with those who really know you and don't get offended when you tease them relentlessly for their incredibly funny goof-up in the middle of that intense dungeon! Friends don't let friends play Aion alone.

Dillon/Ferneyhough – review

The eye-catching UK premieres from Huddersfield's final weekend both came from British composers who now live and

work in the US. Brian Ferneyhough and James Dillon share the same publisher, and find their music routinely

consigned to the stylistic drawer labelled "new complexity". But as these performances reiterated, they really don't

have that much in common, apart from some surface similarities and a fondness for opaque programme notes.

Dillon's Sixth String Quartet ended a superb recital by the Quatuor Diotima, one of the three groups who introduced

it at the Donaueschingen festival last year. It's dedicated to the Scottish trade union leader Jimmy Reid, who died

just as Dillon was completing the score, but the music is in no sense elegiac. The taut single movement lasts around

13 minutes and forms a five-part arc, dominated by the teeming central section and with the last two revisiting the

musical territory of the beginning; it's a lucid structure, filled with bold, striking gestures and not a note

wasted.

The Ferneyhough work, brought by the French group Ensemble Linea, has taken longer to reach the UK: Chronos-Aion was

completed five years ago. Scored for 17 instrumentalists and lasting more than half an hour, it comes with a

typically impenetrable manifesto from the composer. But, as so often in Ferneyhough's music, what is introduced as

impossibly intellectualised turns out to be vividly direct and compelling in performance. The dense thickets of the

opening, connected by delicately coloured threads of sound, give way to explosive instrumental solos and finally to

isolated sound events separated by menacing silences, as the music's energy seems to ebb away.

You know what day it is edition

Because of the way Thanksgiving works in the USA, Ask Massively always falls on the holiday. Last year's approach was closer to my usual one, but you know what? This year, I'm just going for the straight dope. We all know what day it is, we all know what holiday we're celebrating, and in all likelihood we're all so stuffed with turkey that we don't want to think about anything other than slowly sloughing to the bathroom. So let's not kid ourselves.

At any rate, the important part isn't the paragraph I devote to ridiculous nonsense; the important part is the questions. And they're just past the cut -- questions about video personalities, loneliness, and last week's forbidden screenshot.

The problem here is that every one of us was hired for our ability to write, not our ability to be erudite and charming on camera, and several of our team members who don't regularly show up on the stream schedule have reasons that prevent them. For example, I very rarely have the time for the extra setup that's required of livestreaming, plus most of the games I actually play are probably not something people would want to see streamed. Rubi has children to deal with in the evenings and doesn't like other people watching her play. Matt is actually a collection of sentient lawn gnomes who cannot be captured on film. Bree can't get out a sentence without a curse word. You get the idea.

I do like the idea that someone pitched in the comments of allowing me to demoralize the contestants as a Dadaist Simon Cowell, though.

Unfortunately, at this time Massively does not have an official presence or supergroup in the game. This is, I admit, mostly my fault -- I do not have anywhere near the time necessary to properly handle such a group, and seeing as how a steady moderating hand is required to ensure that things don't go off the rails, I've kind of steered clear.

Shanda Games going back to private ownership

If you've been following development on Eligium, you're probably at least passingly familiar with the name Shanda Games. You'd be more familiar with it in China, since the company also operates a variety of games from other markets, including Aion, MapleStory, and Dungeons & Dragons Online. And after having a record-breaking quarter, the company is moving in the opposite direction of what you might expect from a successful company: It's going private. The requisite stocks were purchased by a single family, so the company moving out of the public market.

All shares will be jointly purchased by a parent company headed by Shanda's CEO, Shanda's COO (the CEO's son), and the company director (the CEO's wife). A $180 million loan was taken out to ensure that the stocks could be traded, with the purchasers buying shares at a higher price to help ensure the transfer. The board of directors has already approved this move, which means that it should go through without a hitch before the first quarter of 2012.

Grand Final of ‘GNGWC 2011’ Held in G-Star, Busan, Amid Much Fanfare

Hosted by Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister Kwang Shik Choi) and organized by Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA, President Jae Woong Lee), the Game & Game World Championship 2011 (GNGWC 2011), a festival of the world's gamers, finally selected the world's champions for three games.

In its sixth year this year, GNGWC 2011 held its grand final on November 13, the last day of G-Star 2011, in BEXCO, Busan. The official games this year were 'ShotOnline (OnNet)', ''WarRock (Dream Execution)', and 'AceOnline (Masang Soft)' for which final competitions were held by continent and the world's gamers fiercely competed for the title of world champion and a prize of US$ 27,000.

Fifty-four gamers from 19 countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Russia, Austria, Vietnam and Japan, gathered from 10 a.m. for the final competition, enjoyed the festival and prepared for the games as protagonists.

The first game for which the final competition was held on stage was ShotOnline, a golf game. Selected for six consecutive years as an official game representing GNGWC, ShotOnline is a popular game and a competition for which many users prepare for every year. For the final competition, players '№1『10,000』?' who won the final competition in Korea, 'RinnaiTiger' who won the semi-final and 'tim16', a player who came all the way from Austria, competed. For the first game, they all recorded the same score and arduously fought to win the world championship.

Eventually Austria's 'tim16' dropped out first and '№1『10,000』?' and 'RinnaiTiger' played a tight match after which 'RinnaiTiger' won the title of World Championship. The second fight between '№1『10,000』?' and 'RinnaiTiger' after the first contest in the Korean final ended with 'RinnaiTiger' winning this time around.

WarRock is a FPS game with various guns and a large-scale war for equipment played with four people in a team. At the final contest, Korea's 'Clan Take' and the allied team of the United Kingdom and Canada 'Innovaelite' competed. Given the characteristics of a FPS game, the broadcasting of the players' position or behavior was restrained and the audience viewed the competition on a big screen tensely holding their breath.

During the first game, the Korean team 'Clan Take' won and seemed to lead the game, but during the second and third games, the allied team 'Innovaelite' led the games to eventually won the competition. As four people make up a team to play, the importance of teamplay was emphasized making everyone watching the game tense. In addition, "Aion Chuu" from Japan and "Cyberforce" from Germany each recorded the third and fourth place, respectively. WarRock proved once again its popularity as a game played by gamers in 40 countries worldwide.

Last, the competition for AceOnline was held on stage. As a game of air shooting where one chases and is chased by the counterpart, the winner was selected after winning two out of three games. AceOnline is the only game there was no Korean finalist and a Korean stalled at third place. The final competition between players from Portugal and Vietnam drew much attention.

Portugal's 'Ph0bi4' had won all games in the regional finals and played like a spear while Vietnam's '___PUCCA___' known to play like a shield strongly defended during the game. Commensurate to their reputation, the winner between the spear and shield was not easily discernible.

The two tied during the first game and the second game ended with Portugal's 'Ph0bi4' winning with much difficulty. During the last third game, both players were shot down simultaneously, making it difficult to tell who had won, but after decoding through a screen shot, Vietnam's '___PUCCA___' was deemed to have won. It was eventually declared that both were winners, an unusual outcome.

Through GNGWC 2011, game developers of different types achieved much including sales growth and the drawing of new members amidst high interest expressed by gamers. In the case of ShotOnline, the final game was broadcast live (web stream broadcasting) and over 2,000 people in Europe viewed it despite being in their early morning hours. In the case of WarRock, about 2,000 gamers from the Worldwide WarRock Clans participated in GNGWC and sales in each region increased by an average of 5 percent. Last, AceOnline recorded a 50 percent sales growth in Vietnam and achieved a 10 percent growth in the average monthly number of members in all countries of Europe where the service was provided during GNGWC.

Wings Over Atreia: Tickets please

As we barrel through November and get closer to the holidays, my thoughts have turned to turkey, pie, rolls, pie, and candied yams... did I mention pie? It's not that I can't think of anything else (pie), but I always look forward to family, food, and free time during the upcoming holidays -- free time meaning more gaming and less working! Unfortunately, a few other things are slipping in and interrupting the thoughts of impending gluttony for many Aion players.

Everyone deeply immersed in Atreia knows that two of the most frequent topics of discussion this past week (ignoring all troll comments, of course) have been Star Wars: The Old Republic with its impending effect on Aion and the reduction in arena tickets that went into effect after last Wednesday's maintenance. While Wings Over Atreia took a look at the forthcoming release of TOR last week, I might have altered my predictions a bit had the announcement about the arena tickets happened sooner than right before publishing.

Could one event really affect the balance? Check out past the cut to examine the NCsoft's action, the community's reaction, and the possible repercussions.

One of hottest topics (as denoted by views and replies) on the official forums is the announcement of the "fixing" of the arena ticket bug. I have to admit, when the comment was first made about the reduction, I was all set to reply that two tickets were still available as I personally just logged in and grabbed them. Thank heavens for the edit button, as a quick jump to the forums showed me my error! For anyone who doesn't quite know the situation, here's the scoop: Way back when, in the olden days (i.e., last month), the patch notes for 2.7 were published in Aion's game guide. Oh, happy day, right? Daevas from each hemisphere of Atreia could get a good glimpse at what to expect once 2.7 went live on October 19th. Embedded in this wall of text was the fact that through the introduction quest, Daevas would be granted two arena tickets to test the new PvP arenas. After that, the daily quest would grant only one ticket. However, what was written was not what happened: For four weeks Elyos and Asmodians alike were treated to double arena tickets. Players were excited about the new arenas and flocked to them, filling up the waiting area with a crowd that had only recently been seen during AFK events. Participation was robust, and there was much rejoicing in the lands! *cue Monty Python* Yay. In fact, when I gave my impressions about the future of Aion, I did so with the amount of activity and enjoyment seen in these matches in mind.

Last Monday, the community team let the bomb drop that in just two day's time, the bug that allowed players to receive two arena tickets would be fixed and only one ticket would be rewarded from that time forward. Players from both factions were upset because they felt like something was being taken away from them without any real notice or cause, and I can't blame them. NCsoft let the issue go too long without addressing it. Previously, I have stated how impressed I was with Aion's customer service. However, this community relations blunder is a stain on NCsoft's reputation. And it's one that I think could have been easily avoided.

Aion / Lighting

They are the last days of the 54 ° Biennale, this year devoted to the topic of lighting. Lighting, like the beautiful notion of guiding principles that should govern a State, as the tutelary deity of the imagination, typical of Greek and Latin classics, light as a perception of his absence.

Dialectic of opposites that has generated a Biennial made, even if at times elegant bourgeois finissage of the threshold, it's time to pull the strings for this story Penelope (Bice Curiger) which can be given credit for having avoided divedere "to easygoing "the good from the bad, the winners from the losers, the sacred from the profane. His is a Biennial was the hermeneutic line for the construction of a thought in progress, spiritual architecture for images.

If the theme of eroticism seems to have been the conduit for the most prolific artists, attention should be given also to blow up by Christian Boltanski, which granted the Chance of being thrust into the mechanism of the film, literally. The Italy Pavilion, with the oar brought him the order, is also the generator of the art macro index: Umberto Veronesi, Ennio Morricone, Antonio Marras, are just some of the scholars in the watermark, not giving them even if unwitting accomplices front of the Casbah result.

Vittorio Sgarbi appears as orchestrator polished rhetoric of manipulation for their own purposes condemnable because inappropriate and misplaced.

So to celebrate this flower of Italy is the love for the art here is that the inspiration to ascend the dome oppresses Beauty, acting as a back door of an anti Italian celebration: 151 years of celebration mafia. Mortifying and abominable machinations, the curator would be worth a small kiosk, inside that pavilion egomaniac who is Germany.

Lanes and Gypsy, candles and neon, this Biennale opens to the hypothesis such that everything can be the subject of inspiration, everything can be considered and the top and base and a means to say, while risking a misunderstanding of assumptions, perceptions and penalties.

In the midst of this rhapsody, art retreats in time peripatetic greek garden, meditative space for reflection and genuine insights.

Security Software review list

This Box stikyn the Security Programs list should be checked up to date. Is hard to come fundeerattua whether to make major changes. Hard to say, because listaushan a different potential to the "directory" is not in itself a recommendation.

Especially problematic areas include. malware, malware, denial and removal. At this point, have anti-virus programs have an increasingly larger role. As a result, the actual malware torjujien a less important role. Is it your opinion with other problematic groups?

Some of the changes I'm going to do the structuring of, for example, the entire list is started virus protection and firewalls anymore. Links checked and updated if necessary.

What about the individual programs. Is there feel bad, out of date? Or there are some important missing? Be involved in making the list again updated and useful for all of us! Put comments.

Wings Over Atreia: TORn away

The topic for this week's Wings Over Atreia presented itself when I logged into Aion at prime-time on Thursday night and found the very odd occurrence of both an empty legion list and an empty friends list. Considering how full the latter is (plug for larger lists here), I've never seen both be completely empty simultaneously, even when I pop in during my odd super-late hours. While I saw some life over the rest of the weekend, overall numbers stayed pretty low, even during the hours of the new arena instances. To what do I attribute this? In some cases it was the usual attack of the Real Life (tm) that got ahold of people, but two extra factors contributed to the population insta-decline: the release of Skyrim and more weekend beta invites from Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Now in the case of Skyrim, it can't be helped (but maybe we can have a little spacing between the release of so many games?!). We know that once the game is played through, people will wander back to their MMOs. TOR, however, is another matter: Besides the shininess of of a new game and the fact that it is both Star Wars-based and made by BioWare, does Aion have a future of vast, empty lands to look forward to at the release of the latest OMG-it's-the-second-coming-of-games title? Some are certainly screaming doom-and-gloom, but we hear that from dissenters about nearly every little thing. Is it possible that there is room enough for both games to survive after the initial hype has passed?

Before we delve any further, please note that this article is not going to be a play-by-play comparison of game features. Go ahead and ignite those flamethrowers or burn me in effigy, but I cannot really comment on features of a game that hasn't been released yet. In my opinion, feature lists are all speculative until a game is out and proves it has what it claims. And no, checking it out beta pre-NDA lift (which I haven't done and wouldn't tell you if I did anyways!) doesn't count. I will offer a comparison at a later date, once I have actually stepped in and experienced the game myself.

Yes, I did just admit that I will be testing the waters of TOR; once the devs mentioned the combination of my two most favorite abilities, I knew I'd give it a whirl. Mmmmm... healing and stealth -- like chocolate and peanut butter, two great gaming tastes that taste great together! Not to mention that I game alongside someone who has an almost insatiable need to sample every possible game that comes by, just to see.

I fully admit that upon release of TOR, pretty much all games -- including Aion -- will see a drop in participation. It is the nature of many gamers to run off after the latest shiny and check out what's new. Many studios even make efforts to mitigate this phenomena by offering new content or their own expansions around the time of a major title's release. However, even among those who head out to try the latest game, there are many who always keep one foot planted firmly in their main game or soon return after the seductive newness wears off of the other. As for those who move on, many in that group tend to do that no matter what, always moving on to supposedly greener pixels. However, that drop in population is not necessarily permanent nor will it kill the game. In fact, I doubt it will.

Believe what you will, but I have heard from people (yes, more than a handful!) who have zero desire to try SWTOR. I have also heard plenty of others express some interest in checking it out yet have also declared that they will not let their Aion subs lapse because they plan to remain. Reasons for leaving are at times the same reasons for staying: friends, legion, aesthetics, and genre.

Another reason for heading on over to another galaxy far, far away is that friends or legions are trying it out. I know some legions have already made the declaration that they are moving en masse into the new game. If truth be told, I am not going to miss some of those legions and counter that the overall game experience in Aion will be better for their departure. Conversely, I know legions that are staying as well as players who are content to remain in Atreia with friends.

While both games have a strong focus on faction PvP, for those who are mild to extreme Star Wars fans (or even just prefer a science fiction setting), the decision to move on is natural. On the flip side, there are gaming geeks who are not Star Wars fans or who prefer a fantasy setting. For these gamers, TOR doesn't have any particular pull other than being new. Sure, those players may also test-run the game to check out the new features and compare the games. But some people just would rather play in a particular genre or setting, and those who prefer fantasy will be sticking with Aion in the long run.

Saarinen, second, Ahervo refreshed

Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk won the World Cup Olos First Snow of the traditional five-kilometer cross-country skiing competition on the Sunday. Also on Saturday, winning the Polish Olos defeated second-hiihtäneen Aino Kaisa Saarinen of nearly 20 seconds.

- Yeah, ok skiing. Interactive skiing went well, but equality was pushing a little challenging. This was a really positive performance, including Saturday's second skied Saarinen summed.Aion

Third Sunday skied Ahervo Laura, who has come earlier in the season well under way. Ahervon name is seen as likely to be published in Finland on Monday, the World Cup squad.

- Of course I'm very pleased. I am a little surprised. If I get to go skiing World Cup, so I'm going to ski in the same way. Points would be to go skiing on Saturday, the fourth of five kilometers of free skiing Ahervo explained.

Every Wednesday night, patrons—young  and old, hipster and sporty, hungry and thirsty, pack themselves into the cozy, open dining room in the old Aion Bookstore building located in the historic Hill neighborhood of Boulder. Warm fires roar in both fireplaces, a steady stream of foot-tapping oldies music flows from the speakers, the restaurant’s owners greet guests with ice water poured from emptied out wine bottles and the smell of good cooking wafts from the kitchen, gently reassuring all growling stomachs.

Aion’s weekly Neighborhood Night also doubles as Paella Night.

Now imagine paella, cooked and served family style in cast iron skillets, with braised chicken so tender it practically jumps off of the bone and chorizo with the perfect hint of smokiness, covered in a warm blanket of garlic, tomatoes and an aromatic saffron rice. Sounds good, right? It was absolutely delicious, and expertly paired with a bottle of tasty red wine from Spain.

And now imagine all of this for $35.00. Yes, every Wednesday during dinner service, Café Aion offers enough paella to comfortably feed two hungry stomachs along with a bottle of wine for—for the low price of $35.00.

Such a great deal. And if you can’t wait until Wednesday to dine at Café Aion, then don’t. The neighborhood restaurant is participating in First Bite Boulder (November 11-19th). Click here to get a sneak peak of their First Bite Menu, and once you’re done drooling, click here to make reservations.

First Bite Boulder returns

If it's mid-November in Boulder, it's time for a good deal at local restaurants.

Now in its sixth year, First Bite Boulder, Boulder County's restaurant week, will begin Friday and last through Nov. 19. The event offers a $26 fixed price meal of three courses at some of Boulder's best-known restaurants and a few in East County and Longmont. The event, which was designed to bring in customers at a time of year when restaurant business is historically slow has proved a success, says Kate Lacroix of Dishwire, who along with Josh Dinar of Dining Out Magazine, created the event. New participants this year include The Mediterranean and Pizzeria Locale.

"This is a great value to the community," Lacroix says. "We still have over 40 participants. In years past we've seen restaurants get very competitive with creative menus. Now, they're finding a way to extend or enhance the life of First Bite."

One such extension is a decision last week by Mateo Restaurant Provencal and Radda Trattoria to offer the $26 pricing on a lunch for two. At Radda, that will mean the lunch is the same as the $26 dinner, albeit with smaller portions of the three-course menu: a pasta course with a choice of ravioli with butternut squash, brown butter and sage or pappardelle with Colorado lamb ragu and fresh mint; a second course with a choice of shaved Colorado pork, fennel and black olives; grilled Colorado beef ribeye, fingerling potatoes and greens or crispy polenta with tomato, capers, olives and grana padano. The third course is crostata with Munson Farms apples and vanilla gelato.

Justin Anthony, general manager and beverage director for Radda, says the restaurant created dishes especially for First Bite rather than simply using on-menu items.

"We have fun with the week," he says. "There's a lot of interest (in the community.) We get to introduce ourselves to a lot of people who don't go out to eat that much."

That introduction can lead to return customers.

"(First Bite) definitely helped bring some business right away," says Jason Hein, the acting general manager of Café Aion, which had been open about six months when it participated in First Bite last year.

Choosing a menu is a challenge, Hein says, since the restaurant seeks to encapsulate what it's all about with a few select dishes for those who haven't dined there before. Seasonality and local sourcing is a big driver at Café Aion, as it is at many local restaurants, as well as representing the restaurant's specialties.

For example, Café Aion's first course is a choice of Isabelle Farm pumpkin fritters with walnut aillade; house-cured salami with Cure Farm dilly beans or Isabelle Farm winter squash soup with wild rice, almonds and parmesan. In the second course, diners choose form Frank Silva's braised oxtail with figs, cinnamon, chickpeas and couscous or delicata squash tagine with apricots, saffron and pistachios. Dessert is a choice of a chocolate torte with Noosa Honey yogurt or a Colorado apple crostata with whipped cream.

Mosquito inspires near-painless hypodermic needle

Mosquitoes are perhaps useful for something after all, besides feeding frogs. Along with his colleagues at Osaka's Kansai University, mechanical engineer Seiji Aoyagi has created an almost pain-free hypodermic needle that is based on a mosquito's proboscis. Perhaps surprisingly, the needle's patient-friendliness comes from the fact that its outer surface is jagged, not smooth.

While mosquito bites definitely do itch, the itching only occurs after the feeding is complete, due to bacteria in the anticoagulant injected by the insects. The initial "bite" itself can barely be felt. How is this possible?

A mosquito's proboscis includes an internal tubular labrum (that does the bloodsucking), which is sheathed between two serrated maxillae – one on either side. The maxillae are what first penetrate the skin and then sink into it, after which the labrum slides down between them. Because the maxillae have a jagged outer surface, they present a minimum amount of surface area to nerves in the skin. A smooth steel hypodermic needle, by contrast, makes contact with a maximum number of nerves, and is therefore uncomfortable.

Professor Aoyagi's needle, etched from silicon, mimics the labrum and maxillae. Two harpoon-like jagged-edged outer shanks first penetrate the skin, after which a smooth drug-delivering/blood-taking tube moves down between them, only touching the patient at its sharpened tip. Mosquitos vibrate their proboscis to help the maxillae ease down through the tissue, which Aoyagi has also copied – each of the three parts of his device are vibrated by tiny piezoelectric crystal motors at around 15 hertz.

The needle in its present form is tiny, at just one millimeter in length, 0.1 millimeters in diameter, and with walls a mere 1.6 micrometers thick. It is attached to a five-millimeter-wide tank, designed for storing fluids that the needle collects. To test the needle, Aoyagi's Kansai team used it to puncture silicone rubber with a skin-like resistance, underneath which was a container of red dye. The needle successfully drew the dye into its tank.

When tested on humans, the test subjects stated that it was much less painful than a traditional hypodermic, but that what discomfort there was lasted longer. Aoyagi believes that by copying more of the mosquito's seven mouthparts, including a system to steady the needle as it enters the skin, that discomfort could be further reduced in future versions.

He hopes that the needle could eventually be used to draw samples in labs, or that it could lead to the development of small wireless monitoring devices, which would be permanently attached to the bodies of people such as diabetics.

Obama Mans Up on the Keystone Pipeline Decision

Maybe it is the threat of thousands of protestors circling the White House this weekend. Or maybe he’s sick of being pushed around by Big Oil .  Or maybe he just gets it.

Whatever his motive, President Obama has signaled that he’s gonna man up on the Keystone XL pipeline decision, suggesting that he, and not some political hack in the State Department, will make the final decision about whether or not it is in "the national interest" to permit the construction of a $7 billion pipeline that will bring dirty crude from the Alberta tar sands down to Gulf Coast refineries.

This is a big change.  Just a few days ago, White House press secretary Jay Carney suggested that Obama has better things to do than think about whether or not America should allow the construction of what amounts to a giant hypodermic needle for our oil addiction.  “This is a decision that will be made by the State Department,” Carney said.

No it ain’t. Obama said.  “[The State Department] will be giving me a report over the next several months and, you know, my general attitude is, what is best for the American people? What’s best for our economy both short-term and long-term?  But also, what's best for the health of the American people?" Obama said in a Nebraska TV interview. "Because we don’t want for example aquifers . . . adversely affected. Folks in Nebraska obviously would be directly impacted, and so we want to make sure we’re taking the long view on these issues."

Nebraskans, understandably, are getting riled up about the idea of the proposed pipeline possibly rupturing like a cheap beer can and dumping toxic bitumen into the Ogwalla aquifer, where Nebraskans get more than 80 percent of their water supply.  They are also not happy that the pipeline cuts right through the Sand Hills, one of the most fragile and environmentally-sensitive regions of the state.  This week, the Nebraska legislature began a special session which anti-pipeline activists hope will result in new land use laws that will force TransCanada, which will build the pipeline to – at the very least – re-route the pipeline around the Sand Hills and the Ogwalla aquifer.

In his interview, Obama made it clear that he has heard the concerns of Nebraskans: “We need to encourage domestic natural gas and oil production. We need to make sure that we have energy security and aren’t just relying on Middle East sources. But there’s a way of doing that and still making sure that the health and safety of the American people and folks in Nebraska are protected, and that’s how I’ll be measuring these recommendations when they come to me.”

Asked if the potential for jobs from the project will affect his decision, Obama replied, "You know it does, but I think folks in Nebraska like all across the country aren’t going to say to themselves, we’ll take a few thousand jobs if it means that our kids are potentially drinking water that would damage their health, or if rich land that is so important to agriculture in Nebraska ends up being adversely affected, because those create jobs, and you know, when somebody gets sick that’s a cost that the society has to bear as well. So these are all things that you have to take a look at when you make these decisions."

Of course, there are other things that you have to take a look at when you make these decisions.  Like how burning 830,000 barrels per day of dirty, carbon-intensive tar sands oil will increase the risks of climate change, and why, after vowing during the campaign to “end the tyranny of oil,” Obama would consider signing off on a project that will only increase our dependency on it.

Still, for activists who have long complained about Obama’s failure to engage on climate and energy issues, his latest remarks about the pipeline are good news.  If nothing else, it is a sign that he is paying attention.  How much attention is another question. For that, they’ll have to wait for his decision on the pipeline permit itself, which is expected to come before the end of the year.

Sunflower Kiwanis Club sponsors 'Boo to the Flu' event

What can scare ninja warriors, zombies and vampires? Just try waving a hypodermic needle at them.

Sunflower Kiwanis Club sponsored a “Boo to the Flu” event Monday night during the Pittsburg Family YMCA Halloween carnival.

Janis Goedeke of the Crawford County Health Department and two nurses were present to administer free flu shots to children. Sunflower Kiwanis members assisted with registration and consent forms, and also provided beverages and treats for the youngsters.

A special guest for the event, who happily posed for photos with the children, was BeeWise Immunize.

“Janis told me she was going to bring a special guest,” noted Dean Cortes, club member.

“BeeWise came all the way from Wichita, or at least the outfit did,” Goedeke said. “It’s from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.”

“We’ve been doing ‘Boo to the Flu’ for five or six years,” Cortes said. “One year we didn’t do it because they didn’t have enough vaccine. Last year we gave out 80-plus flu shots, and we’d like to do more this year.”

Goedeke said it’s important to immunize youngsters because the very young and senior citizens are those most at risk from flu.

“Any time we get a chance to get youngsters in, we take it, and Kiwanis has been a great partner with us,” Goedeke said. “We mix a little health and a little fun.”

For some children it wasn’t much fun, and there were screams and tears from several. Others, like Kaylan Hall, didn’t even flinch from the needle.

“You need to get the youngsters prepared and tell them what to expect,” said Brenda Robertson, Hall’s great-aunt. “I took my grandbabies in, and somebody said ‘We’ll need to have somebody to hold them down,’ and I said, ‘No, you will not,’ and there wasn’t one tear from them. Even my 3-year-old grandchild didn’t cry.”

Two people arrested for alleged home invasion

Two of three people wanted in connection with an alleged home invasion last week near Bunker Hill were arrested Saturday on outstanding warrants.

Both Matthew Wayne Lange Jr., 22, of Martinsburg, and Autumn T. Blaine, 36, of Phillips Lane, Bunker Hill, were charged with first-degree robbery. Blaine also was arraigned on charges of forgery and uttering, as well as three counts of possession of a controlled substance.

According to court records, at about 11:12 p.m. Oct. 24, Berkeley County Sheriff's Deputy M. Stewart was dispatched to a report of a home invasion on Sam Mason Road.

When he arrived, he spoke to the complainants and the victim. One of the residents of the home said that she was sitting in the living room when three individuals walked inside without knocking. The woman told police she knew two of the subjects, Blaine and Lange, who walked in, records show.

The witness said that the two individuals had large silver flashlights when they entered the residence. A third individual was carrying a large digging tool with a wooden handle. The witness told police they walked to a back bedroom before leaving a few minutes later, records show.

Stewart spoke with another resident, who also was in the living room and observed Blaine, Lange and the third individual enter the home without knocking.

Stewart spoke with the alleged victim, who said that he was asleep when the three subjects were there and that he didn't see any of the individuals. He said that one of the residents of the home woke him up and told him what happened. He said that he looked around and observed clothes from a dresser laying all over the floor. The man said he looked in the drawer and noticed that his wallet, containing $1,000, was missing, records show.

Police then went to Blaine's residence but found no one there. They later located her at her boyfriend's home. They found her inside a bathroom holding a spoon with a light brownish substance on it. Lange and another woman holding a hypodermic needle also were found in the bathroom, records show.

In the living room of the residence, police found a large silver flashlight on a couch. All of the suspects denied knowing anything about the home invasion and avoided answering any of Stewart's questions. Stewart later found an open bag containing marijuana, heroin and several Xanax pills in the bathroom.

Police also found a digging tool with a wooden handle on a seat inside Blaine's vehicle.

As of Monday, both Lange and Blaine remained in custody at Eastern Regional Jail. If convicted of first-degree robbery, they face no less than 10 years in prison.
